The Jeweller's Shop
Starring: Burt Lancaster, Olivia Hussey, Ben Cross
"Love is one of the greatest dramas of human existence," writes Pope John Paul II whose literary exploration of relationships; the joys, and the pain of love and marriage are wonderfully adapted for the screen.
Filmed in the breathtaking heart of Europe, The Jeweller's Shop unfolds in the nostalgic streets of 1930's Kracow as a local jeweller (Burt Lancaster) holds watch over the intimate hopes and fears, loves and longings of the town's community.
But with the dark shadow of war looming across the fragile landscape, anxiety takes hold over the lives of three couples; the first joyfully planning their wedding, the second long-married but unhappy and the third about to marry but full of doubts.
Writing with profound insight about a love that can survive even the grave, Pope John Paul II unravels such fundamental human concerns as: What does it mean to fall in love? When do we know that a love is real, and can love last the test of time?
There are no easy answers, and there is no happy endings - such is the nature of men and women, and such is the nature of love. But above all insecurities, fragilities and doubts, there is always hope.
