The Truth About Homosexuality

The Truth About Homosexuality
The Cry of the Faithful
author John F. Harvey O.S.F.S.
377 pages ppbk

This book addresses the complex moral and pastoral questions involved in both homosexual orientation and activity, including an analysis of lifestyles in accord with the Christian Gospel and those running counter to Christian moral teaching. Fr. Harvey, a pioneer in the pastoral care of homosexual persons through his organization Courage, gives a comprehensive view of the issues involved in homosexuality.

The primary focus of this book is to give pastoral guidance to persons with a homosexual orientation and to those assisting them. He discusses the history, growth and success of the movement Courage, a support group that helps homosexuals lead chaste lives. He explores various pastoral programs for homosexuals and discusses many diverse pastoral situations of the young, aged, men and women.

This book explodes two popular myths, namely, that the homosexual condition is due primarily to genetic factors, and that, once one realizes he has a homosexual orientation, he should resign himself to this condition forever. Harvey shows that many reputable therapists have provided empirical evidence that people with a homosexual condition can have a change of orientation to the heterosexual condition. In addition to an extensive study of the possibility of change of orientation, this book also discusses the question of gay-rights legislation and same-sex marriages, and the challenges posed by such legislation.

They say....

"This book offers not only good advice, wise counsel and intelligent discussion, but also the bright light of hope and fresh insights from some of the most positive Christian thinking in a complex and sensitive area." Fr. Benedict Groeschel

"Father Harvey has written a thoughtful and inspirational book. It counters the recenttide of books by Catholic writers which attempt to offer justification for a gay anthropology and gay spirituality. Here is a genuinely Catholic response to the problem of homosexuality, founded on solid psychological principles, with special understanding of a life dedicated to chastity." Joseph Nicolosi, Ph. D.
